The bad news. Okay: my cat has been 30 feet up in an maple tree since Tuesday morning. The fire department does not rescue cats. People keep knocking on my door, asking if I've called the fire department. I have to tell them, the fire department does not rescue cats from trees. When I tell them this, they look crestfallen, like something they've always thought was true isn't, and has been a lie all this time.

The good news is that Wild Girl saw the ocean today for the first time-- that she remembers. She said, "bubble bath!" when she saw it. That's what it must have looked like to her: a giant bubble bath, the white crests of waves brimming over.
